Programs Supported by United Good Neighbors

American Red Cross
American Red Cross addresses the needs of disaster relief which include food, shelter, clothing, lifesaving medication and mental health counseling, as a result of either a man-made or natural disaster.

Big Brothers Big Sisters      
A community based program, where an adult mentor makes a one-year commitment and meets with a youth for three to four hours, two to four times a month engaged in cultural and sporting events, creative endeavors, and the joy of spending time together.

The Boiler Room     
A unique coffee shop in the heart of Port Townsend downtown whose mission is providing a safe, drug free environment for anyone.  The Boiler Room is run by volunteers, many of whom are patrons themselves, and promotes healthy activities to anyone interested.

Camp Fire USA Juan de Fuca Council
Safe and fun summer camp activity, where each individual learns responsible decision-making, appropriate behavior, conflict resolution and social interaction with new people.

Catholic Community Services – Volunteer Chore Services
Volunteer Chore Services provides the means for seniors and people with disabilities to remain in their homes. This includes devices for mobility in the home, transportation to medical appointments, minor home repair, wheelchair ramps, grab bars, night-lights, non skid surfaces and other building materials for keeping a home safe and clean.  They also provide support to the Boeing retirees' organization in its task of elderly self-sufficiency.

Children's Hospital            
Since its founding, Children's mission has been to care for any child in the region regardless of the family's financial circumstances. Children's meets the health care needs of children, ensuring all children have access to quality health care.

Clemente Course    
The Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities is a nationally acclaimed, free, college-level course in the humanities held in the evenings over a period of five months.

Community Outreach Association Shelter Team (COAST)
A winter shelter for homeless located at the American Legion in Port Townsend.  The shelter operates from December to March and is staffed with community volunteers.

Concerned Citizens
This is an early intervention program for children, ages birth to three, who are disabled or developmentally delayed.

Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH)
DASH volunteers consult with county, city and state groups regarding improvements for pedestrian access.

Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault (DVSA)
Services for victims include emergency shelter, food, clothing, transportation, counseling, legal advocacy, therapy, and higher education mentoring.

Ecumenical Christian Helping Hands Org (ECHHO)
ECHHO provides free medical equipment, transportation, chores and social support services primarily to elderly, disabled, low or limited income persons to encourage them to remain living independently.

Edensaw Community Cancer Foundation (ECCF)
ECCF raises and distributes funds to residents of Jefferson County, who are struggling financially due to the costs associated with the cancer treatments they are having.

JC MASH
JC MASH is a clinic offering open access, no cost, medical treatment in Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Parks & Rec Quilcene After School Open Gymnasium Program
A supervised, after-school gym program for all children, which includes County Rec basketball, soccer leagues, 4H, summer camps and more.

Jefferson County Public Health

Substance Abuse Prevention - Specialized parenting education and support to high-risk families through intensive home visits to break the cycle of abuse, both physical and substance.

Family Planning - Focused efforts on prevention of unintended pregnancies and providing education on healthy behaviors, with an emphasis on access to care and decreasing disparity for teens and young women who are "working poor" with no insurance.

Jefferson AIDS Service
The main function of AIDS Service is to help provide economic stability to those living with AIDS in Jefferson County.

Jefferson Mental Health

Crisis Program - A 24hr, seven day a week, crisis counseling program.
Harbor House Day Treatment – Provides routine monitoring and support in its daily meetings.

Jefferson County Family YMCA
An 11-week summer camp and swimming program for children ages 5-12.

Jefferson County Food Bank Association           
The Food Bank distributes food at four locations in Jefferson County and uses the support of Olycap.

Jumping Mouse Children's Center
Therapy services to children who've experienced major trauma from homelessness, drug withdrawal, abuse or neglect, or being in a foster home.

Literacy Council
Literacy Council continues to work closely with the Jefferson County Library and the Friends of the Library to assist the citizens of our County in all Literacy issues.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
NAMI is a non-profit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization for people with severe and persistent mental illnesses, as well as family members and friends.

Northwest Kiwanis Camp
The Kiwanis Camp provides recreational and educational services to individuals with disabilities through activities designed to empower all campers to experience success despite their disease or disability.

Olympic Community Action Council
The community action council is an umbrella agency to a variety of health and human service programs. The following are programs funded by United Good Neighbors:

Emergency Shelter – short term housing with case management
Food Distribution – assistance for the upkeep of the food bank truck for food delivery and stores food bank supplies.
Health Care Access – UGN assists the Oral Health Program, which operates a portable dental clinic
Early Childhood Education (Therapeutic Model) – reduced group size for children and increased availability of responsive adults to children living in environments of high risk factors.
Senior Nutrition -  The Meals on Wheels program serviced 72 participants in Jefferson County during 2008 providing a total of 7,560 home delivered meals.
Working Image – Promotes the self-sufficiency of women living in poverty by providing interview and work outfits and bolstering customer's confidence through supportive counseling.  In 2008, Working Image provided support to 164 women.

Peninsula Dispute Resolution Center
Center provides low-cost mediation services; services ranging from civil to parenting plans.

Pregnancy and Family Resources Services
A variety of services are offered to enable soon-to-be parents obtain life skills with personal case management strategies.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Financial assistance for food, shelter and utilities.

South Jefferson Little League
A baseball Little League team located in Quilcene.

Jefferson Teen Center
An after-school center for young people that has mentoring and homework assistance. Staff works closely with local prevention organizations to ensure that youth can experience a supportive atmosphere for them to make healthy choices.

UGN Impacts Lives

American Red Cross – assisted 100 individuals after a disaster

Big Brothers Big Sisters – 200 carefully screened and trained caring adults matched with youth in one-to-one mentoring relationships.  10,400 hours of mentoring produced 90% academic success, 70% prevention of youth substance abuse and 95% prevention of violence/anti-social behavior all these showed "maintained" or "improved" performance outcome evaluations.

The Boiler Room – based on head counts done over 13 days in December 2008, the number of service contacts per month is about 2,250 or about 27,000 a year.  This may be a duplicated head count.

Concerned Citizens – birth to three – evaluates and screens developmentally delayed children for individual therapy and teaching.  26% of children no longer need specialized therapy after the three period.

Community Outreach Association Shelter Team (COAST) – an Emergency Winter Shelter located in the American Legion basement in Port Townsend.  The shelter is open from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m.  The shelter is operated 100 days and accounts for 1550 bed nights.

Clemente Course – provides everything needed for participation in Bard College humanities course.  The college experience opens the door to those otherwise would not attempt a college education.   

Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Program –  In FY 2008–2009, assisted 616 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with information and referral, advocacy based counseling, support group, prevention groups, emergency shelter, legal advocacy.

Ecumenical Christian Helping Hands Organization (ECHHO) –  One hundred percent of the people assisted were seniors and disabled adults and this amounted to 638 and received 2,560 individual contacts/interactions with ECHHO volunteers.  ECHHO also loaned 502 persons 1,113 pieces of medical equipment.

Edensaw Community Cancer Foundation – this foundation assisted 26 Jefferson County residents, who are struggling financially due to the costs associated with the cancer treatments they are having.  The assistance has gone towards medical benefits, transportation costs, utility bills, children's clothing, etc.

JC MASH – 301 citizens with low to no income and/or resources, the homeless, the unemployed, those underinsured or with no insurance, and those otherwise unable to access traditional medical care received medical care from JC MASH.  The care included treatment, RX assistance, flu shots and advocacy.  The increase of services to those increased 18%from last year. 

Jefferson AIDS Service (JAS) – assists the emergent needs to those with AIDS.  The AIDS group has incomes below the federal poverty level, UGN funds are used to supplement "Client Emergency Living Expenses" which covers preventing homelessness, food and heat.

Jefferson County Family YMCA -  provides summer camp and swimming to 150 Jefferson County youth this summer.

Teen CenterJefferson County Food Bank Association – uses United Good Neighbors funds for the purchase of food only.  In 2008, total poundage of food distributed was 727,409, in 2007 the total poundage of food distributed was 681,004 making 2008 an increase of 46,405 in pounds.

Jumping Mouse – intense child therapy to those victims of violence, the ages range from 0-12 years.  Outcomes from counseling to self-regulation and interest in the world, problem solving and communication, representational play and mood/emotions stabilization.  The result is decrease in using the health and human services throughout their life.

Northwest Kiwanis Camp – a recreational, educational, therapeutic camp for individuals with disabilities.  The noticeable outcomes reported by teachers, parents and support specialist is an increase in communication skills. 

Olympic Community Action Council

Oral Health Care Access – over 200 Jefferson County residents received dental care with a mobile dental clinic operating in Brinnon and Port Townsend.

Emergency Shelter (Haines Street Cottages) – In 2008, 7205 emergency shelter bed nights were provided to 38 homeless families comprised of 48 adults plus 53 children for a total of 101 individuals.  Additionally, one family of four moved into transition housing.  Eighteen heads-of-households found employment while they were staying at the shelter; these adults supported a total of 69 separate individuals.

Northwest Passage Family Transitional Housing Program – Seven of 11 families were housed, which included 13 adults and 23 children to a total of 36 individuals. Of the individuals who stayed in the transitional housing (a two-year program), seven of 11 families served found permanent.

Senior Nutrition – Meals on Wheels serviced 72 participants in Jefferson County during 2008, providing a total of 7,560 home delivered meals.

St. Vincent de Paul – this program helped 1,003 Jefferson County residents with shelter, utilities and food.

Jefferson Teen Center – a total of 300 youth between the ages of 12-18 used the center's resources (i.e. homework, employment, health, mentoring assistance) during the last school year.
